Is Cypress in Harris County, and why does the county matter to my tax bill?
Answered by Allen Markel, REALTOR®, Texas Premier Realty ·
Short answer
Yes. 1,325 of 1,326 active Cypress listings are in Harris County, and the county drives a large part of the bill. Harris County, its hospital district, flood control district, port authority and department of education together charge $0.628928 per $100 of value, about 24% of the total rate on a typical Cypress home, or $2,648 a year on $421,000. The Harris Central Appraisal District sets the values, and the Harris County Tax Office collects the tax.
Which county lines are on a Cypress bill?
Five county-level units show on every complete Cypress stack we checked: Harris County at $0.38096, the Harris County Hospital District at $0.18761, the Harris County Flood Control District at $0.04966, the Port of Houston Authority at $0.0059 and the Harris County Department of Education at $0.004798, for a combined $0.628928 per $100. One listing is tagged to Harrison County in the MLS feed, which we treat as a data-entry inconsistency to check. Both ZIP codes in use, 77433 (973 active listings) and 77429 (352), are in Harris County. For a homeowner, the practical consequence is that a county-level change moves every Cypress bill together. Between 2023 and 2025 the Harris County Hospital District rate rose from $0.14343 to $0.18761, and the Flood Control District from $0.03105 to $0.04966, according to the HCAD table, which adds about $186 a year on a $421,000 home for the hospital line and $78 for flood control compared with the 2023 rates.
Why does the county matter beyond the tax rate?
Three practical reasons. Values come from the Harris Central Appraisal District, which sends the notice of appraised value in the spring and hears protests. Collection and payment go through the Harris County Tax Office. Flood-control work and floodplain maps in Cypress are managed at the county level through the Harris County Flood Control District. Because the county lines are the same across Cypress, they do not explain differences between subdivisions; the MUD line does. For county-level comparisons, our Harris County page shows a 2.25% median total rate across 18,290 active listings with a complete stack. The county also matters when comparing Cypress with a home just across a county line. A house in Waller County or Montgomery County has different county, hospital and flood lines and a different appraisal district. If you are cross-shopping, compare the total rate from a certified stack for each address, which our listing pages show when it is complete, instead of comparing county names.
Amounts and rules change every year.
